Backup Strategies

In working out at backup strategy you need to find out how much data you can afford to loss and at what times the production server has reduced activity that can allow a backup to occur. Once you have answered these questions you need to finally ask the most important question how easy is it to recover using this strategy. Restoring is the ultimate goal of backing up.
I will present three templates there are not the only methods I have not include log shipping or anything high end just straight forward backup scenarios as a starting point.
A. Critical Database in production data loss is critical to Buisness
  1. Nightly Full Backup at 12.00am
  2. Differential at 6.00am, 12.00pm, 6.00pm
  3. Log Backups at either 5 or 10 minute intervals
B. Semi Critical Database in production data loss is less critical to Buisness
  1. Saturday Morning Full Backup at 1.00am
  2. Differential Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday at 1.00am
  3. Log Backups at either 15 or 30 minute intervals
C. Non Critical Database in production data loss is not critical to Buisness (would expect minimum growth per week)
  1. Monthly Full backup first day of month at 2.00am
  2. Differential Every other day at 2.00am
  3. Log Backups at hourly intervals
This is just a starting guide I will follow up with a testing of restore strategy tomorrow
